In honour of Mother’s Day, we decided to compile a list of our favourite television mother figures. There were so many to choose from it was difficult to narrow it down! Here’s to well-written, well-acted role model moms.
- Lorelei Gilmore, Gilmore Girls
Despite questionable clothing choices Lorelei Gilmore is the coffee-loving, book-toting, inn-running, sass-talking cool mom we all want to be. She’s so very #relatable. We can’t wait to see what’s in store when the reunion happens!
2. Original Aunt Viv, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
You probably knew that there were two versions of Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince. If not, Jazzy Jeff points it out when the switch happened by making a meta-comment about how different she looks after having the baby. Original Aunt Viv was a strong, opinionated, confident woman and one of my favourite moments was when she took dancing lessons and completely killed it.
3. Beverly Goldberg, The Goldbergs
The Goldbergs is wrapping up its third season and you should be watching it. Thankfully, if you haven’t, you can spend an entire day catching up and loling. All the characters are great, but Bev is the best. She is the epitome of a “smother,” is extremely confident and is always dressed to the nines.
4. Grams, Dawson’s Creek
An underrated mother figure who helped raised the hellion Jen Lindley, is Grams. She starts out staunch and harsh but softens as the series continues. You truly learn to love Grams and all she has been through. P.S. Searching for Grams gifs made me want to drop everything and re-watch all of Dawson‘s Creek.
5. Peggy Hill, King of the Hill
It was a toss-up between Marge Simpson and Peggy Hill. Don’t get me wrong, I love Marge, but there is something about Peggy’s unprecedented confidence and obscenely large feet. She’s a substitute Spanish teacher and Boggle Champion, who often provides the voice of reason even when she isn’t qualified to do so.
6. Clair Huxtable, The Cosby Show
Even Bill Cosby can’t ruin Clair Huxtable. She’s one of the most memorable TV moms who is tough, intelligent, loving and silly. She is such a classy lady who always wins an argument, likely due to her career as a lawyer. There are many sides to Clair and I’ve always looked up to her.
7. Kitty Forman, That 70s Show
Kitty might be the best part of this show. I didn’t fully appreciate her until I started re-watching the series. She’s sweet and supportive, but realistic. She’s always there to provide advice and her trade-mark laugh during awkward situations. The best moments are when Kitty lets her cheery personality slide and we see her rougher side.
8. Jessica Huang, Fresh Off the Boat
This is another newer show that markets off of our desperate need for nostalgia, but it does it right. The series takes place in the 90s and the standout character in the show is Jessica Huang. Another mom who is extremely confident and protective of her children. Jessica strongly believes in tough love and wants her children to succeed by any means necessary.
9. Jean Weir, Freaks & Geeks
Jean is innocent and sweet and deserves so much more appreciation than she gets in the series. She’s sensitive and has nothing but love for her family. My favourite scenes in the series take place at the Weir’s dinner table.
10. Lucille Bluth, Arrested Development
She’s on the list of best moms, but she is the best because she is the worst. Lucille is never without a snarky comment and a drink in hand. Arrested Development features a ton of hilarious characters, but Lucille Bluth is top banana. Whether it’s her appreciation for the P.I. Gene Parmesan or her over-protection of her youngest son, Buster Bluth, Lucille makes us cry laugh.
